Erick Morillo

Erick Morillo, born on March 26, 1971, was a prominent Colombian-American disc jockey and music producer renowned for his significant contributions to the house music genre. He gained fame through his work with the label Strictly Rhythm and is perhaps best known for the iconic 1993 hit 'I Like to Move It,' which he produced under the pseudonym Reel 2 Real. This track not only topped charts but also became a cultural staple, featured in commercials, movies, and ringtones.

As a record label owner of Subliminal Records, Morillo played a pivotal role in the music industry, producing the number-one Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play hit 'Fun' by Da Mob. His label was instrumental in promoting emerging talents such as Eddie Thoneick, Carl Kennedy, and DJ DLG. In recognition of his exceptional skills, he was awarded the DJ Awards 'Best House DJ' three times, in 1998, 2001, and 2003, and also received accolades as 'Best International DJ' in 2002, 2006, and 2009, accumulating a total of fifteen nominations from 1998 to 2010.

Morillo's impact on the music scene was profound, with U.K. club and events promoter Terry Slade praising him as 'one of the best live DJs I ever booked in my twenty years career.' His electrifying performances and innovative productions left an indelible mark on the dance music landscape.

Tragically, Erick Morillo's life came to an untimely end when he died from a drug overdose at his home in Miami Beach, just three days before he was scheduled to appear in court to face serious charges.
