His journey in filmmaking began with a series of short films, including Rives in nineteen ninety-two, Eternelles in nineteen ninety-five, and Seule in nineteen ninety-seven. However, it was his feature film debut, The Dreamlife of Angels, released in nineteen ninety-eight, that truly established his reputation. The film garnered critical acclaim and won the Best Actress award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Following this success, Zonca directed Le Petit Voleur (The Little Thief) in nineteen ninety-nine, further showcasing his talent. In two thousand eight, he released Julia, a film inspired by John Cassavetes' Gloria, featuring Tilda Swinton and filmed across California and Mexico.
