He is best remembered for creating two of the country's most beloved TV series, Matador and Huset på Christianshavn, which have left an indelible mark on Danish culture.

His feature film Qivitoq, released in nineteen fifty-six, garnered international acclaim, earning a nomination for the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival in nineteen fifty-seven, as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His film Den kære familie, produced in nineteen sixty-two, was also recognized at the third Moscow International Film Festival.
Balling's creative collaborations extended to the popular Olsen Gang series of comedy films, where he worked alongside special effects expert Henning Bahs. This partnership contributed to the series' charm and success, further solidifying Balling's reputation as a versatile and innovative filmmaker.
