Erik Solheim

Erik Solheim, born on January eighteenth, nineteen fifty-five, is a distinguished Norwegian diplomat and former politician. His political career began with the Socialist Left Party, where he led the youth branch from nineteen seventy-seven to nineteen eighty-one and served as party secretary from nineteen eighty-one to nineteen eighty-five. Solheim was a member of the Norwegian Parliament from nineteen eighty-nine to two thousand one and held the position of party leader from nineteen eighty-seven to nineteen ninety-seven, during which he guided the party towards a more centrist approach.

In two thousand, Solheim transitioned from active politics to a role as a special adviser in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participating in efforts to mediate the Sri Lankan Civil War. He returned to the Norwegian government in two thousand five as Minister of International Development, later adding the role of Minister of the Environment in two thousand seven, serving in both capacities until two thousand twelve.

After his tenure in government, Solheim resumed his advisory role in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chaired the OECD Development Assistance Committee from two thousand thirteen to two thousand sixteen. His international career continued as he became the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme from two thousand sixteen to two thousand eighteen, a position he left following an internal audit.

Since departing from government, Solheim has been vocal about his views on the Socialist Left Party and has aligned himself with the centrist Green Party, becoming an active strategic adviser during the two thousand fifteen elections and officially joining the party in two thousand nineteen. He is a father of four, having had two marriages throughout his life.
