Erik Weihenmayer

Erik Weihenmayer, born on September 23, 1968, is an extraordinary American athlete, adventurer, author, activist, and motivational speaker. He made history on May 25, 2001, by becoming the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, a remarkable achievement that earned him a feature on the cover of Time magazine.

In September 2002, Weihenmayer completed the Seven Summits, joining an elite group of only one hundred fifty mountaineers at the time, while uniquely standing out as the only blind climber to accomplish this feat. His adventurous spirit did not stop there; in 2008, he ascended the Carstensz Pyramid, thus completing the Eight Summits.

Weihenmayer's climbing repertoire includes notable ascents such as the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite in 1996 and the challenging Losar, a vertical ice face in the Himalayas, in 2008. His passion for adventure extends beyond mountains; in September 2014, he kayaked the entire 277 miles of the Grand Canyon alongside blinded Navy veteran Lonnie Bedwell, tackling one of the most formidable whitewater locations in the world.

In 2005, he co-founded No Barriers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities to confront challenges, problem-solve, build effective teams, and serve their communities.
