Ermesinda of Bigorre

Ermesinda of Bigorre, originally named Gerberga or Gisberga, was born in the year one thousand fifteen. She was the daughter of Bernard-Roger, Count of Bigorre, and Garsenda of Bigorre, and a prominent member of the House of Foix. As the sister of notable figures such as Bernard II, Count of Bigorre, and Roger I, Count of Foix, she played a significant role in the political landscape of her time. It is also suggested that she may have been related to Stephanie, Queen of Navarre, who was married to García Sánchez III of Navarre.

On the twenty-second of August in one thousand thirty-six, Gerberga married King Ramiro I of Aragon, after which she adopted the name Ermesinda. Their marriage lasted for thirteen years, during which Ramiro transformed from a vassal with fragmented territories around Jaca into the de facto ruler of a burgeoning kingdom that encompassed the former counties of Aragon, Sobrarbe, and Ribagorza. This remarkable ascent is what earned him the title of the first King of Aragon.

Ermesinda and Ramiro I were blessed with several children who all reached adulthood. Their offspring included Sancho Ramírez, who succeeded his father, García, Bishop of Jaca, Teresa, who married William Bertrand of Provence, Sancha, who had two marriages, and Urraca, who became a nun. Each of these children contributed to the legacy of their family and the region.

Ermesinda's life came to an end on the first of December in one thousand forty-nine, and she was laid to rest at the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña. Her husband, Ramiro, would go on to remarry four years later to Agnes, marking a new chapter in the royal lineage.
