Ernak

Ernak, the last known ruler of the Huns, emerged as a significant figure in the aftermath of his father Attila's death in AD 453. As the third son of the formidable Attila, Ernak found himself in a tumultuous period where the once-mighty Hunnic Empire began to fragment. Following the demise of Attila, the remnants of the empire were divided among his three sons: Ellac, Dengizich, and Ernak.

In AD 454, Ernak succeeded his elder brother Ellac, stepping into a role that likely involved dual kingship with his brother Dengizich. This arrangement allowed them to govern separate divisions of the Huns across different territories, showcasing a complex political landscape during a time of decline.

Historical accounts, particularly from Priscus, shed light on Ernak's relationship with his father. During a banquet in AD 448 or 449, Attila regarded Ernak with a unique fondness, seemingly favoring him over his other sons. This preference was rooted in a prophecy that suggested Ernak's lineage would ultimately restore the Huns, a belief that added a layer of expectation to his rule.

Ernak's legacy is further intertwined with the history of the Bulgars, as he is often identified with Irnik from the Nominalia of the Bulgarian khans. This connection highlights his significance not only as a Hunnic leader but also as a pivotal figure in the broader narrative of Eastern European history, leading the Bulgars for approximately one hundred and fifty years starting around AD 437.
