Ernest Mason Satow

Sir Ernest Mason Satow, born on June thirtieth, eighteen forty-three, was a distinguished British diplomat and scholar, renowned for his contributions to Japanology. His influence extended far beyond the shores of Britain, as he became a prominent figure in Japan, where he was affectionately known as Satō Ainosuke. Satow's career spanned significant historical periods, including the Bakumatsu and Meiji eras, where he was instrumental in fostering diplomatic ties in East Asia. The guide has undergone several updates by esteemed diplomats, with the sixth edition, edited by Sir Ivor Roberts, published by Oxford University Press in two thousand nine, spanning over seven hundred pages.
