Ernest Moniz, born on December twenty-second, nineteen forty-four, is a distinguished American nuclear physicist and former government official. He served as the thirteenth United States Secretary of Energy from May two thousand thirteen to January two thousand seventeen during the Obama administration. His extensive career in public service also includes roles as associate director for science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy from nineteen ninety-five to nineteen ninety-seven and as undersecretary of energy from nineteen ninety-seven to two thousand one under the Clinton administration.
In addition to his governmental roles, Moniz is currently the co-chair and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the president and CEO of the Energy Futures Initiative (EFI), a nonprofit organization he co-founded in two thousand seventeen. EFI focuses on climate and energy technology issues and is funded by the natural gas industry. His commitment to energy and environmental issues is further exemplified by his involvement as a founding member of The Cyprus Institute.
Moniz has had a significant academic career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he held the position of Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems. He also directed the Energy Initiative and the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment. His expertise has led him to serve in various advisory capacities for major corporations, including BP and General Electric, as well as the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
