Ernesto Geisel, born on August third, nineteen oh seven, was a prominent Brazilian Army officer and politician who served as the twenty-ninth president of Brazil from nineteen seventy-four to nineteen seventy-nine during a period of military dictatorship. His early life was shaped by his German Lutheran immigrant parents, leading him to military prep schools and eventually graduating as an artillery officer from the Military School of Realengo.
Geisel's political career began in nineteen sixty-four when he was appointed Chief of the Military House under President Castelo Branco. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an Army General in nineteen sixty-six and later serving as Minister of the Superior Military Court in nineteen sixty-seven. His influence grew during the Emílio Médici government, where he was appointed president of Petrobras, aided by the support of his brother, Orlando Geisel, who was Minister of the Army.
In nineteen seventy-four, Geisel ran for president as the candidate of the National Renewal Alliance (ARENA), winning a decisive victory with four hundred votes, which accounted for eighty-four point zero four percent of the total, against the opposition ticket that garnered seventy-six votes, or fifteen point ninety-six percent. He assumed the presidency on March fifteenth, nineteen seventy-four, and his administration was characterized by a gradual political openness and a reduction in the harsh repression of the military regime, despite facing significant opposition from hardline factions.
During his presidency, Geisel oversaw several significant events, including the merger of the state of Guanabara with Rio de Janeiro, the creation of Mato Grosso do Sul, and the resumption of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. His government also recognized Angola's independence, signed nuclear agreements with West Germany, initiated Brazil's democratization process, and repealed AI-5, all while making substantial progress on the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant.
After leaving office, Geisel continued to wield influence over the military throughout the nineteen eighties. He played a crucial role in the nineteen eighty-five presidential election by supporting the opposition candidate, Tancredo Neves, which helped ease military resistance to Neves' presidency. In his later years, he served as president of Norquisa, a holding company in the petrochemical sector.
