Ernie Fletcher

Ernie Fletcher, born on November twelfth, nineteen fifty-two, is a notable American politician and military officer who served as the 60th governor of Kentucky from two thousand three to two thousand seven. A member of the Republican Party, Fletcher's political career was preceded by his work as a family practice physician and a Baptist lay minister. He made history as the second physician to be elected governor of Kentucky, following Luke P. Blackburn's tenure in eighteen seventy-nine, and was the first Republican to hold the office since Louie Nunn left in nineteen seventy-one.

Fletcher's academic journey began at the University of Kentucky, where he graduated before joining the United States Air Force, aspiring to become an astronaut. However, after budget cuts limited his squadron's flying time, he shifted his focus to medicine, ultimately earning a degree and entering private practice. His political career took off in nineteen ninety-four when he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives. Although he faced defeat in his initial bid for the U.S. House of Representatives, he later won a seat after defeating Democratic state senator Ernesto Scorsone.

In two thousand three, Fletcher was elected governor, defeating state Attorney General Ben Chandler. During his administration, he implemented significant changes, including reorganizing the executive branch to achieve state savings. He proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the state tax code in two thousand four, but faced challenges in passing it through the General Assembly. The legislative session ended without agreement, leading to an executive spending plan that Fletcher maintained until two thousand five, when both the budget and tax reforms were finally approved.

Fletcher's governorship was marred by controversy when an investigation into his administration's hiring practices led to indictments against several staff members, including himself. Although he pardoned his staff, he did not extend the same to himself. The investigation cast a shadow over his re-election campaign in two thousand seven, where he ultimately lost to Democrat Steve Beshear after successfully fending off a primary challenge from former Congresswoman Anne Northup. Following his term, Fletcher returned to the medical field, founding and serving as CEO of Alton Healthcare. He is married and has two adult children.
