Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg

Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg, born on May tenth, nineteen ninety-nine, was a prominent Austrian nationalist and politician who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Austria during the interwar period. He was instrumental in the establishment of the dictatorial conservative Ständestaat, a regime that sought to maintain Austria's independence and traditional values amidst the rising tide of fascism in Europe.

A staunch opponent of the Anschluss, Starhemberg's political career was marked by his leadership of the Heimwehr and later the Fatherland Front. He served in the Bundesrat from nineteen twenty to nineteen thirty, held the position of Minister of Interior in nineteen thirty, and ascended to the role of Vice-Chancellor in nineteen thirty-four. Following the assassination of Engelbert Dollfuß, he briefly took on the responsibilities of Acting Chancellor and Leader of the Front, although he stepped down shortly thereafter.

Disillusioned with the moderate policies of Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg, Starhemberg was ousted from power in nineteen thirty-six when the Heimwehr was dissolved. The rise of the Nazis prompted him to flee Austria to escape potential retribution. His journey took him to Switzerland, where he served with the Free French and British forces during the early stages of World War II. However, his discontent with the Allies' alliance with the Soviet Union led him to leave for Argentina, where he spent the next thirteen years in exile.

Starhemberg's life came to an end during an extended visit to Austria in nineteen fifty-six. His legacy includes being the one thousand one hundred sixty-third Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an esteemed Austrian honor.
