His journey in professional football began at Željezničar, where he laid the foundation for a career that would see him traverse various leagues and clubs across Europe.

After his time at Željezničar, Zukanović had brief stints with Austria Lustenau II, Velež, Sulzberg, and KFC Uerdingen. He eventually found his footing in Belgium, playing for teams such as Dender, Eupen, Kortrijk, and Gent. His career took a significant turn in 2014 when he was loaned to Chievo, marking the start of his ventures in Italy.

In 2015, Zukanović made a permanent move to Sampdoria, followed by a transfer to Roma the next year. His time at Roma included loans to Atalanta in 2016 and Genoa in 2017, where he later signed a permanent deal. In 2019, he joined Al-Ahli, and the following year, he moved to SPAL. His career continued to evolve as he signed with Fatih Karagümrük, and in 2022, he became a part of Asteras Tripolis.
