Esen Taishi

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Esen Taishi

Esen Taishi, born in the year fourteen hundred and seven, emerged as a formidable military leader and khagan of the Northern Yuan dynasty during a tumultuous period in Mongolian history. As the son of Oirat taishi Toghon, he showcased his military prowess in conflicts against Moghulistan, achieving notable victories that included the capture of its khan on two separate occasions.

Following the death of his father in fourteen thirty-eight, Esen became the de facto ruler of the Mongols, although he remained formally subordinate to Taisun Khan of the Northern Yuan. Throughout the 1440s, he expanded his influence by seizing Hami along the Silk Road, asserting control over Gansu's Mongol principalities, subduing the Uriankhai, and ultimately unifying Mongolia under his leadership.

Esen's relationship with Ming China was fraught with tension, characterized by limited trade and escalating hostilities. The Ming dynasty restricted exchanges to tribute and, in fourteen forty-nine, reduced the goods provided to Esen's envoys. This diplomatic strain culminated in war, particularly after the Ming refused to grant an imperial princess to Esen's son. In July of that year, he launched a significant invasion of China, leading to a decisive victory at the Battle of Tumu Fortress, where Ming forces under Emperor Yingzong were soundly defeated, resulting in the Emperor's capture.

Despite his military success, Esen was unable to fully exploit his victory, as the Ming enthroned Yingzong's brother, the Jingtai Emperor, and peace was made in fourteen fifty, with Yingzong being released. In the early 1450s, Esen navigated a succession conflict by eliminating Taisun, briefly installing and subsequently killing a puppet khan, before declaring himself khan. However, his decision to designate his son, Amasanj, as taishi incited a rebellion led by his subordinate Alag, ultimately leading to Esen's defeat and death.
