Esma Redžepova

Esma Redžepova, born on August eighth, nineteen forty-three, was a celebrated Macedonian Romani vocalist, songwriter, and humanitarian, often referred to as "the Queen of the Gypsies" for her profound impact on Romani culture and music. Her musical journey began in the 1950s as a teenager, and she enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned over five decades. Redžepova's artistic success was closely intertwined with her marriage to Stevo Teodosievski, a talented composer and director of the musical ensemble Ansambl Teodosievski, who managed her career and penned many of her songs until his passing in nineteen ninety-seven.

Redžepova's musical style drew heavily from traditional Romani and Macedonian influences, while also incorporating elements of pop music. She emerged as a pioneering figure during a time when Romani music faced significant stigma in Yugoslavia, particularly for women. As one of the first artists to perform in the Romani language on radio and television, she broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of Romani musicians.

Renowned for her powerful and emotive voice, Redžepova was recognized by NPR in two thousand ten as one of the fifty great voices in the world. Her extravagant attire, including her signature turbans, and her embrace of cultural stereotypes surrounding Romani women, such as sensuality and joy, further distinguished her in the music scene. In two thousand ten, she received the Macedonian Order of Merit, and in two thousand thirteen, she was honored as the National Artist of the Republic of Macedonia by President Gjorge Ivanov.

Beyond her musical achievements, Redžepova was deeply committed to humanitarian efforts, having fostered forty-seven children with her husband. She championed Roma and women's rights and engaged in local politics in her hometown of Skopje. In two thousand thirteen, she represented Macedonia alongside Vlatko Lozanoski in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden, where they performed the song "Pred da se razdeni" after initial controversy over their original entry. Unfortunately, they placed sixteenth out of seventeen in the semi-finals.

Esma Redžepova passed away on December eleventh, two thousand sixteen, after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift the Romani community and music lovers worldwide.
