Essad Toptani

Essad Toptani, born in 1863, was a prominent Albanian politician and military officer who played a significant role in the early political landscape of Albania. He is best remembered for his tenure as the third prime minister of Albania from 1914 to 1916, a period marked by political upheaval and the quest for national identity.

Before ascending to the role of prime minister, Toptani was instrumental in establishing the Republic of Central Albania, which was based in the coastal city of Durrës. His leadership during this formative time helped lay the groundwork for Albania's future governance and independence.

In addition to his political endeavors, Toptani served as an officer in the Ottoman army, which provided him with a unique perspective on military and political affairs. His experience as an Albanian deputy in the Ottoman Parliament further enriched his understanding of the complexities of governance in a multi-ethnic empire.
