Étienne Carjat

Étienne Carjat, born on March twenty-eighth, eighteen twenty-eight, was a multifaceted French artist whose talents spanned journalism, caricature, photography, poetry, writing, and painting. His diverse skill set allowed him to capture the essence of Parisian life and its prominent figures through various mediums.

As a co-founder of the magazine Le Diogène and the founder of the review Le Boulevard, Carjat made significant contributions to the literary and artistic landscape of his time. His work is particularly noted for its incisive portraits and caricatures of influential political, literary, and artistic personalities in Paris.

Among his most celebrated achievements is the iconic portrait of the poet Arthur Rimbaud, taken in October eighteen seventy-one. This photograph remains a defining image of Rimbaud and showcases Carjat's ability to encapsulate the spirit of his subjects.

Despite his impactful work, much of Carjat's photography has become untraceable, particularly after it was sold to a Mr. Roth in nineteen twenty-three. This loss adds an air of mystery to his legacy, leaving many of his contributions to be rediscovered and appreciated by future generations.
