Étienne Gilson

Étienne Gilson, born on June thirteenth, eighteen eighty-four, was a prominent French philosopher and historian of philosophy. His scholarly pursuits primarily focused on medieval philosophy, with a particular emphasis on the works of Descartes. Gilson's intellectual journey also led him to engage with the existential tradition of Thomas Aquinas, although he did not identify himself as a neo-Thomist philosopher.

In recognition of his significant contributions to philosophy, Gilson was elected an 'Immortal' member of the Académie française in nineteen forty-six. His influence extended beyond academia, as he was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, highlighting the impact of his philosophical writings.

In two thousand nine, the International Étienne Gilson Society was established to further promote his thought and the study of classical philosophy within both academic and cultural contexts. This society publishes the journal Studia Gilsoniana, which serves as a platform for ongoing discourse surrounding Gilson's ideas and their relevance today.
