Étienne Marcel

Étienne Marcel, born in the year 1315, was a prominent merchant and politician in medieval France. He served as the provost of the merchants of Paris during the reign of King John II, known as John the Good. Marcel was a staunch advocate for the small craftsmen and guildsmen, who constituted the majority of the city's populace, ensuring their voices were heard in the political arena.

As a delegate of the Third Estate, Marcel played a crucial role in the general assemblies convened during the tumultuous period of the Hundred Years' War. His leadership was particularly evident in 1357 when he spearheaded a reform movement aimed at establishing a more controlled monarchy in France, challenging the authority of the Dauphin, the heir to the throne.

During the Jacquerie peasant rebellion, Marcel's political allegiances shifted as he chose to support Charles II of Navarre over the Dauphin, Charles V. This decision underscored his commitment to the common people and their struggles against the ruling class.

Tragically, Étienne Marcel's life came to a violent end when he was killed while attempting to open the gates of Paris to the rebellious mobs. His legacy as a defender of the rights of the urban populace and a reformist leader remains significant in the history of France.
