Euclid Tsakalotos, born on June nineteenth, nineteen sixty in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, is a prominent Greek economist and politician. He has served as the Minister of Finance of Greece from two thousand fifteen to two thousand nineteen and has been a member of the Hellenic Parliament representing Athens B since May two thousand twelve. A founding member of the New Left (Greece) parliamentary group, he left Syriza in November two thousand twenty-three after a long tenure with the party.
Tsakalotos's academic journey began in the United Kingdom, where he attended St Paul's School in London. He pursued higher education at The Queen's College, University of Oxford, studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He later earned a master's degree from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and returned to Oxford to complete his doctorate in economics in nineteen eighty-nine under the guidance of Włodzimierz Brus.
His professional career in academia started at the University of Kent from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-three, where he met his partner, Heather D. Gibson. He then moved to Greece, teaching at the Athens University of Economics and Business from nineteen ninety-four to two thousand ten, before becoming a professor of economics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in two thousand ten. Tsakalotos has authored several books in both Greek and English and has contributed to various academic journals.
Politically, Tsakalotos began as a student member of the Communist Party of Greece and joined Synaspismos in the early nineteen nineties. He was elected to the Central Committee of Syriza in two thousand four and served as the shadow finance minister from two thousand twelve to two thousand fifteen. Following Syriza's rise to power in January two thousand fifteen, he was appointed as an Alternate Minister within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later led Greece's negotiating team on the third bailout package. His appointment as Minister of Finance came on July sixth, two thousand fifteen, after the resignation of Yanis Varoufakis.
