Eunomius of Cyzicus

Eunomius of Cyzicus, born in three hundred thirty-five, emerged as a prominent figure in the theological debates of the early fourth century. Hailing from either Dacora in Cappadocia or Corniaspa in Pontus, he was deeply influenced by the teachings of Aetius during his studies in Alexandria. His theological journey took a significant turn when he came under the mentorship of Eudoxius of Antioch, who later ordained him as a deacon.

In three hundred sixty, Eunomius was appointed bishop of Cyzicus, a position that allowed him to express his extreme Arian views openly. However, his outspoken beliefs led to widespread discontent among the populace and criticism from contemporary writers, including Andronicianus. Within a year of his elevation, the emperor Constantius II intervened, compelling Eudoxius to depose Eunomius from his bishopric.

Following his deposition, Eunomius found refuge in Constantinople during the reigns of Julian and Jovian. There, he maintained close ties with Aetius, working to solidify a dissenting faction within the church and consecrating bishops to support his cause. His journey eventually took him to Chalcedon, but in three hundred sixty-seven, he faced banishment to Mauretania for sheltering the rebel Procopius. Remarkably, he was recalled before reaching his destination, allowing him to continue his theological pursuits.
