Eva Dawes

Eva Dawes, born on September seventeenth, nineteen twelve, in Toronto, Canada, was a remarkable athlete known for her prowess in high jumping. Competing primarily in this discipline, she made her mark on the international stage during the early 20th century.

Her athletic career reached a pinnacle when she represented Canada at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she secured a bronze medal in the high jump. Although she qualified for the 1928 Summer Olympics, her age of just fifteen prevented her from participating. In a show of principle, she chose to boycott the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Nazi Germany.

In addition to her Olympic achievements, Dawes showcased her talent at the 1934 Empire Games, where she earned a silver medal in the high jump competition, further solidifying her status as a leading athlete of her time.

In nineteen thirty-seven, she relocated to England and married Arthur Spinks. The couple initially settled in London before moving to Thames Ditton in nineteen sixty-nine. For the last years of her life, she resided at the St. Helens retirement home, where she lived until her passing on May thirtieth, two thousand nine, just two weeks after suffering a stroke.

Eva's legacy continued to shine as she attended the book launch of 'A Proper Spectacle - Women Olympians 1900 - 1936' on March nineteenth, two thousand, joining fellow sportswomen from the 1920s and 1930s to celebrate their contributions to athletics.
