Eva Klein

Eva Klein, born on January twenty-second, nineteen twenty-five, was a distinguished Hungarian-Swedish scientist whose contributions to cancer immunology have left an indelible mark on the field. After leaving Hungary in nineteen forty-seven, she joined the prestigious Karolinska Institute, where she dedicated her career to advancing our understanding of cancer and the immune system.

As a young Jewish woman, Klein faced significant challenges due to discrimination, particularly during the late stages of German occupation, when she was forced to hide to survive. Despite these adversities, she pursued her education and became a medical doctor with a PhD in biology, specializing in cancer immunology and virology.

In the nineteen sixties, Klein made groundbreaking discoveries, including the identification of natural killer cells and the development of Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines. Her collaborative work with her husband, George Klein, further propelled her research, leading to significant advancements in the understanding of tumor-specific antigens.

In nineteen seventy-five, the U.S. Cancer Research Institute recognized her contributions by establishing the William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology. The inaugural award was shared among sixteen pioneering scientists, including Eva and George Klein, who were celebrated for their comprehensive immunological analysis of human cancer, particularly Burkitt's lymphoma.
