Evelin Jahl

Evelin Jahl, born on March twenty-eighth, nineteen fifty-six, is a distinguished former discus thrower from Germany, celebrated for her remarkable achievements in athletics. Representing East Germany, she made history by winning two Olympic gold medals, a feat that set her apart in the world of sports.

Her Olympic journey began at the Montreal Summer Olympics in nineteen seventy-six, where she triumphed in the women's discus event, overcoming the favorite and world record holder, Faina Melnik. Jahl's prowess continued to shine as she set a new world record in nineteen seventy-eight and clinched victory at the European Championships. She successfully defended her Olympic title in Moscow in nineteen eighty, once again besting her rival, Vergova, who was competing under her married name, Petkova.

From nineteen eighty until two thousand sixteen, Jahl remained the only discus thrower to defend her Olympic title and secure two gold medals, a remarkable achievement that was later matched by Croatia's Sandra Perković at the two thousand sixteen Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

After retiring from competitive throwing in nineteen eighty due to an injury, Jahl took on a leadership role as the GDR chairperson of a commission within the GDR track and field association DVfL. Following her Olympic success, she married shot putter Norbert Jahl and competed under her married name for the remainder of her athletic career. Although she later married swim trainer Harald Herberg, that union was short-lived, resulting in the birth of a son from their brief marriage.
