Evelyn Hooker

Evelyn Hooker, born on September second, nineteen oh seven, was a pioneering American psychologist and university teacher whose groundbreaking work challenged the prevailing notions of her time regarding homosexuality.

In nineteen fifty-six, she published her influential paper titled "The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual." In this study, Hooker administered various psychological tests to groups of self-identified male homosexuals and heterosexuals. She then asked experts to identify the homosexual participants and assess their mental health.

The results of her research were striking; they revealed no significant differences in mental adjustment between homosexual and heterosexual men. This pivotal finding helped to dismantle the false correlation that had long existed between homosexuality and mental illness, which had been perpetuated by earlier studies that focused on homosexual men with histories of mental health treatment.

Hooker's work was instrumental in refuting cultural heterosexism, demonstrating that homosexuality was not developmentally inferior to heterosexuality. Her contributions ultimately paved the way for the removal of homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, marking a significant shift in the understanding of sexual orientation.
