Evgeny Pashukanis

Evgeny Pashukanis, born on February 11, 1891, was a prominent jurist, politician, philosopher, and lawyer who made significant contributions to legal scholarship in the Soviet Union and Lithuania. He is best remembered for his influential work, The General Theory of Law and Marxism, which explored the intersection of law and Marxist theory.

Pashukanis's ideas challenged the prevailing legal doctrines of his time, advocating for a philosophy of law that was deemed threatening by the Soviet authorities. His critical approach to legal structures and the state raised eyebrows among the ruling elite, leading to tensions with the regime.

Tragically, his intellectual pursuits and political beliefs culminated in his execution in 1937. Accused of plotting to overthrow the Soviet state by Stalinists, including the notorious Andrey Vyshinsky, Pashukanis's life was cut short, marking a significant loss for legal philosophy.
