Ewald Georg von Kleist

Ewald Georg von Kleist, born on June 10, 1700, in Wicewo, Farther Pomerania, was a multifaceted German jurist, physicist, and Lutheran pastor. He hailed from the distinguished von Kleist family, with his father serving as district administrator. Ewald's academic journey took him to the University of Leipzig and the University of Leyden, where he developed a keen interest in electricity, likely influenced by the renowned Willem 's Gravesande.

From 1722 until 1745 or 1747, Ewald held the esteemed position of dean at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Kamień Pomorski, located in the Kingdom of Prussia. His career progressed as he became the president of the royal court of justice in Köslin, further solidifying his reputation in the legal field. Ewald was also a member of the prestigious Academy of Sciences in Berlin, contributing to the intellectual landscape of his time.

In a remarkable turn of events, on October 11, 1745, Ewald independently invented the Kleistian jar, a groundbreaking device capable of storing electricity in substantial quantities. This invention marked a significant milestone in the study of electricity. He shared his discovery with a group of Berlin scientists in late 1745, which eventually led to the jar being known as the Leyden jar, thanks to the subsequent investigations at Leyden University.
