F. R. Leavis

Frank Raymond "F. R." Leavis, born on July 14, 1895, was a distinguished English literary critic whose influence permeated the landscape of English literature throughout the early to mid-twentieth century. His academic journey was largely spent at Downing College, Cambridge, and later at the University of York, where he shaped the minds of countless students and scholars.

Leavis emerged as one of the most significant figures in literary criticism during the 1950s and 1960s. His insights and critiques were so impactful that, as noted by J. B. Bamborough in 1963, it would be accurate to assert that nearly everyone engaged in the study of English literature over the preceding thirty years had been influenced by his work in some capacity.

His presence was as notable as his intellect; Clive James described him as a figure who could be seen walking briskly along Trinity Street, his gown billowing behind him as if he had mastered the art of walking in a wind-tunnel.
