Fahad Al-Ghesheyan

Fahad Al-Ghesheyan, born on August 1, 1973, is a former Saudi Arabian football player renowned for his contributions to the sport during the 1990s. He gained international recognition when he participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where he scored a memorable goal against Sweden in the Round of 16. At that time, he was a key player for Al-Hilal, one of Saudi Arabia's most prestigious clubs.

Al-Ghesheyan made history as the first Saudi player to venture into European football, signing with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. His move was facilitated by the club's manager, Willem van Hanegem, who had previously managed Al-Hilal and recognized Al-Ghesheyan's potential. Known for his exceptional dribbling skills and pace, he played primarily as a right winger, although his career was marred by issues of professionalism and consistency.

His rise to prominence began during the Asian Youth Cup qualifiers, where he played a pivotal role in leading the Saudi team to qualification. Al-Ghesheyan's standout performance came during the FIFA World Youth Cup against Brazil, where he dominated the match, showcasing his remarkable ball control and speed, which left the Brazilian defense struggling to keep up.

Despite his talent, Al-Ghesheyan faced challenges in breaking into the senior national team due to the presence of established stars like Majid Abdullah and Sami Al Jabir. His opportunity came during the World Cup, but he was introduced late in the match against Sweden, managing to score but ultimately unable to turn the tide for his team.

After a fallout with Al-Hilal's management, Al-Ghesheyan's unexpected transfer to Al Naser, a rival club, shocked fans and left him disheartened. His time at Naser was short-lived, and he soon retired from professional football at the age of thirty, feeling frustrated by his inability to return to his boyhood club.
