Fanny Crosby

Frances Jane van Alstyne, widely recognized as Fanny J. Crosby, was born on March 24, 1820, and became a prominent figure in American music and mission work. Over her lifetime, she composed an astounding collection of more than eight thousand hymns and gospel songs, with her works reaching over one hundred million printed copies. By the end of the nineteenth century, Crosby had established herself as a household name, revered for her contributions to both music and humanitarian efforts.

Known affectionately as the 'Queen of Gospel Song Writers' and the 'Mother of Modern Congregational Singing in America', Crosby's influence on American hymnals is profound. Her gospel songs are considered quintessential examples of revival music, and her collaboration with Ira Sankey played a significant role in the success of the Moody and Sankey evangelical campaigns. Among her most celebrated hymns are 'Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour', 'Blessed Assurance', and 'To God Be the Glory'.

Despite her prolific output, some publishers hesitated to include so many hymns by a single author in their collections, prompting Crosby to adopt nearly two hundred pseudonyms throughout her career. In addition to her sacred works, she penned over one thousand secular poems, published four poetry books, and co-wrote popular secular and patriotic songs, including the notable cantata 'The Flower Queen', the first secular cantata by an American composer.

Crosby's commitment to Christian rescue missions and her engaging public speaking further solidified her legacy. Her life and work continue to inspire countless individuals, reflecting her deep faith and dedication to uplifting others through music and service.
