Farley Granger

Farley Earle Granger Jr., born on July 1, 1925, was an American actor whose career spanned several decades, showcasing his talents in film, stage, and television. He first caught the attention of a Goldwyn casting director during a small stage production in Hollywood, leading to a significant role in the controversial film The North Star in nineteen forty-three. This film, which praised the Soviet Union during World War II, was later criticized for its political stance. Following this, Granger starred in The Purple Heart in nineteen forty-four before serving in the Navy, where he was stationed in Honolulu and involved in troop entertainment.

During his naval service, Granger made valuable connections with notable figures such as Bob Hope, Betty Grable, and Rita Hayworth. It was also during this time that he began to explore his bisexuality, a facet of his life he felt no need to hide. Granger's career took a significant turn when he collaborated with the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock. His role in Rope, a fictionalized account of the infamous Leopold and Loeb murder case, garnered him critical acclaim, despite the film receiving mixed reviews.

Hitchcock cast Granger again in the classic thriller Strangers on a Train, where he portrayed a tennis star entangled in a deadly plot orchestrated by a wealthy psychopath. Granger described this experience as his happiest in filmmaking. His versatility allowed him to continue performing on stage, in films, and on television well into his seventies, with a diverse body of work that included classical drama on Broadway, Italian-language films, and significant documentaries about Hollywood.

For his contributions to television, Granger was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 1551 Vine Street. His legacy as a talented actor and autobiographer remains influential, reflecting a career that embraced both the challenges and triumphs of the entertainment industry.
