Sheikh was particularly known for his role in Parallel Cinema, also referred to as New Indian Cinema, where he collaborated with renowned directors such as Satyajit Ray, Sai Paranjpye, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Ayan Mukherjee, and Ketan Mehta. His performances were marked by depth and authenticity, earning him a special place in the hearts of audiences.

In addition to his film career, Farooq Sheikh made notable appearances in television serials and stage productions. One of his most memorable performances was in the play Tumhari Amrita in nineteen ninety-two, where he starred alongside Shabana Azmi under the direction of Feroz Abbas Khan. He also hosted the popular TV show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai during its first season.

After a hiatus, Sheikh returned to the silver screen in two thousand eight and continued to act until his untimely passing on December twenty-eighth, two thousand thirteen.
