From eighteen seventy-three until his passing in eighteen eighty-nine, Father Damien immersed himself in the lives of the lepers, teaching them the Catholic faith while also addressing their physical needs. He was instrumental in establishing essential infrastructure within the community, including homes, schools, roads, hospitals, and churches.
