Federico Borromeo

Federico Borromeo, born on August eighteenth, fifteen sixty-four, was a distinguished Italian cardinal and the Archbishop of Milan, playing a pivotal role during the Counter-Reformation in Italy. His commitment to charity is particularly notable, especially during the devastating famine of sixteen twenty-seven to twenty-eight, and his courageous efforts during the plague of sixteen thirty are immortalized in Alessandro Manzoni’s renowned novel, The Betrothed.

A passionate patron of the arts, Borromeo founded the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, which stands as one of the earliest free public libraries in Europe. In sixteen eighteen, he expanded this cultural institution by adding a picture gallery, generously donating his own impressive collection of paintings, thereby enriching the artistic heritage of Milan.

In addition to his philanthropic endeavors, Borromeo was a prolific writer, with over one hundred published works primarily in Latin. His writings reflect his deep interest in ecclesiastical archaeology, sacred painting, and the art of collecting. His intellectual contributions have left a lasting impact on the fields of theology and art.

In sixteen twenty-three, Borromeo reclaimed the feudal rights over the territory historically known as the “State” of the Borromeo within the Duchy of Milan, earning the titles of Marquess of Angera and Count of Arona. These titles continue to be used by his family as a courtesy, signifying the enduring legacy of his noble lineage.
