Félicien Kabuga, born on March 1, 1933, is a Rwandan businessman whose life has been marked by controversy and infamy. A multimillionaire, he was deeply intertwined with the political landscape of Rwanda, particularly with President Juvénal Habyarimana's Hutu Power MRND party and the Akazu, a group of Hutu extremists that played a significant role in the Rwandan genocide.
Kabuga is infamously recognized as the primary financier behind extremist media outlets that incited violence against the Tutsi minority. His financial support for the RTLM radio station and Kangura magazine was pivotal in promoting the ideology that led to widespread atrocities during the genocide.
In 2020, after evading justice for twenty-six years, Kabuga was apprehended by French police in Greater Paris at the age of eighty-seven. He was subsequently transferred to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity.
However, in 2023, his trial was halted when he was declared unfit to stand trial due to dementia, marking a tragic turn in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the genocide.
