Felipe Massa, born on April 25, 1981, in São Paulo, Brazil, is a distinguished racing automobile driver known for his remarkable career in Formula One and beyond. Raised in Botucatu, Massa began his journey in motorsport at the tender age of eight, excelling in karting and securing numerous national and regional titles. His ascent through the ranks continued as he triumphed in junior formulae, culminating in a championship win in the Euro Formula 3000 in 2001.
Making his Formula One debut in 2002 with Sauber, Massa quickly showcased his talent, earning points finishes in his rookie season. However, after being replaced in 2003, he transitioned to a test driver role at Ferrari. His return to Sauber in 2004 was followed by a significant career shift in 2006 when he joined Ferrari, partnering with the legendary Michael Schumacher. Massa's career reached new heights as he claimed his first victory at the Turkish Grand Prix and became the first Brazilian since Ayrton Senna to win his home Grand Prix.
The pinnacle of Massa's career came in 2008 when he finished as the runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship, losing the title to Lewis Hamilton by a mere point in a dramatic finale. His career faced a severe setback in 2009 when a life-threatening accident during qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Nevertheless, he made a strong comeback in 2010, briefly leading the championship before leaving Ferrari in 2013 after contributing to two World Constructors' Championships.
In 2014, Massa joined Williams, where he experienced a resurgence, achieving his first pole position in six years and multiple podium finishes. Although he initially announced his retirement in 2016, the unexpected departure of Nico Rosberg led him to extend his career until the end of the 2017 season. Throughout his illustrious Formula One career, Massa secured eleven wins, sixteen pole positions, and forty-one podiums.
Beyond Formula One, Massa has continued to make his mark in motorsport, competing in the Stock Car Pro Series and the IMSA SportsCar Championship. He also participated in Formula E from 2018 to 2020 and entered the Porsche Carrera Cup Brasil in 2020. His commitment to karting remains evident as he hosted the charity Desafio Internacional das Estrelas until 2014 and served as the president of the Commission Internationale de Karting from 2017 to 2022.
