Ferdinand I of Austria

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ferdinand I of Austria

Ferdinand I of Austria, born on April nineteenth, seventeen ninety-three, ascended to the throne as Emperor of Austria in March of eighteen thirty-five, following the death of his father, Francis I. His reign was marked by a series of challenges, primarily due to his severe epilepsy, which rendered him incapable of ruling effectively. In light of this, his father had stipulated in his will that Ferdinand should seek counsel from his uncle, Archduke Louis, and be guided by the influential Prince Metternich, who served as Austria's Foreign Minister.

Despite his limitations, Ferdinand earned the affectionate sobriquets of The Benign and The Benevolent, reflecting his kind-hearted nature. He also held the titles of King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia, as well as King of Lombardy–Venetia, among other lesser titles. His reign coincided with the tumultuous Revolutions of eighteen forty-eight, which ultimately led to his abdication on December second of that year.

After stepping down, Ferdinand lived a quiet life at Hradčany Palace in Prague until his death in eighteen seventy-five. He married Maria Anna of Savoy, the daughter of Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia, but the couple did not have any children, which marked the end of his direct lineage.
