Ferdinand the Holy Prince

Ferdinand the Holy Prince, known in Portuguese as Fernando o Infante Santo, was born on September twenty-ninth, fourteen hundred and two. As the youngest member of the illustrious House of Aviz, he was an infante of the Kingdom of Portugal and served as the lay administrator of the Knightly Order of Aviz. His life was marked by both noble lineage and a tragic fate.

In the year fourteen thirty-seven, Ferdinand took part in the ill-fated Siege of Tangier, an endeavor led by his elder brother, Henry the Navigator. Following the siege, he was captured and handed over to the Marinid rulers of Morocco as a hostage, a move dictated by the terms of a treaty negotiated by Henry for the surrender of Ceuta. Initially, Ferdinand enjoyed a relatively comfortable existence as a noble hostage in Asilah.

However, as time passed and it became clear that the Portuguese authorities were unwilling to relinquish Ceuta, Ferdinand's situation deteriorated. He was transferred to a prison in Fez, where he faced significantly harsher conditions. Despite ongoing negotiations for his release that spanned several years, they ultimately proved fruitless.

Ferdinand the Holy Prince passed away in captivity on June fifth, fourteen forty-three. His legacy, however, endured, as a popular cult emerged around his figure in Portugal, where he is affectionately remembered as
