Ferdowsi

Abolqasem Mansour bin Hassan Tusi, known by his pen name Ferdowsi, was born in the year nine hundred and forty and became one of the most revered figures in Persian literature. He is best known for his monumental work, the Shahnameh, or 'Book of Kings,' which stands as one of the longest epic poems authored by a single poet. This masterpiece not only showcases Ferdowsi's literary genius but also serves as a cultural bridge linking pre-Islamic and post-Islamic Iran.

Ferdowsi began his journey in poetry at the age of thirty, drawing inspiration from the earlier Abu-Mansuri Shahnameh. He completed the Shahnameh in nine hundred and forty-four, just before the rise of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, and later produced a second edition in one thousand and ten. While other poems have been attributed to him, such as the Masnavi of Yusuf and Zulaikha, these claims often lack substantial evidence.

Coming from a family of landed gentry, Ferdowsi lived during the Samanid era, a time marked by a resurgence of Persian identity and language. His works reflect a deep understanding of ancient Iranian cultures and religions, including Zoroastrianism and Mithraism. Despite his knowledge of Arabic, Ferdowsi's literary prowess was firmly rooted in Persian, allowing him to articulate a rich poetic worldview that emphasized wisdom as the foundation of goodness.

Ferdowsi's legacy is not merely poetic; it is intellectual and cultural. He believed that wisdom enables individuals to discern between good and evil, leading to both worldly happiness and spiritual salvation.
