Before ascending to the presidency, Mádl held various ministerial roles in the conservative governments of József Antall and Péter Boross. He was appointed as minister without portfolio from nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety-three, and subsequently served as the Minister of Education from nineteen ninety-three to nineteen ninety-four.

Mádl's political journey included a notable attempt to secure the presidency in nineteen ninety-five, where he was defeated by Árpád Göncz. However, his perseverance paid off five years later when he was elected as the head of state, representing the governing conservative coalition.
