Fernanda Montenegro

Fernanda Montenegro, born Arlette Pinheiro Monteiro Torres on October 16, 1929, is a celebrated Brazilian actress renowned for her remarkable contributions to theater, cinema, and television. Often hailed as the greatest Brazilian actress of all time, she has earned the title of the grande dame of the performing arts in Brazil. Her illustrious career spans over sixty years, during which she has captivated audiences with her powerful performances.

Montenegro made history in 1998 when she became the first Brazilian and first Latin American actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Central Station. This groundbreaking achievement marked a significant milestone, as she was also the first actress nominated for an Academy Award for a performance in a Portuguese language film. Her accolades include winning the Emmy Award for Best Actress in 2014 for her role in Sweet Mother, making her the first Brazilian to receive this honor.

Throughout her career, Montenegro has received numerous prestigious awards, including the National Order of Merit in 1999, awarded by then-president Fernando Henrique Cardoso. She has been recognized with the Molière Prize five times and is a three-time recipient of the Governor Award of the State of São Paulo. Her performance in Central Station earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 48th Berlin International Film Festival, along with nominations for both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award.

In recent years, Montenegro has continued to break records, being recognized by Guinness World Records in November 2024 for achieving the largest audience at a Philosophy lecture, attended by over fifteen thousand people. On November 4, 2021, she was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters, succeeding Affonso Arinos de Mello Franco. In December 2025, she announced her retirement from film, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of artists.
