Fernando de Rojas, born in 1465, was a prominent Spanish author and dramatist, best known for his seminal work, La Celestina. Originally titled Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea, this literary masterpiece was first published in 1499 and is often regarded as a pivotal transition between the Spanish Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Rojas crafted La Celestina during his student years, showcasing his remarkable talent at a young age. Following his graduation, he pursued a career in law, where he achieved notable success despite facing challenges, including scrutiny from the Inquisition.
In addition to his legal career, Rojas served as the mayor of Talavera de la Reina, a position he held for the last thirty years of his life. Although he did not produce any further literary works, the acclaim and popularity of La Celestina endured throughout his lifetime, solidifying his legacy in Spanish literature.
