Fernando Lugo

Fernando Lugo, born on May 30, 1951, is a prominent Paraguayan politician and former Catholic bishop who served as the President of Paraguay from 2008 to 2012. His political journey began after a significant tenure as a Roman Catholic priest, during which he held the position of Bishop of the Diocese of San Pedro from 1994 until 2005. Lugo's election as president marked a historic shift in Paraguayan politics, ending a remarkable sixty-one years of dominance by the Colorado Party.

His presidency was characterized by efforts to address social inequalities and promote reforms, but it was cut short in 2012 when he was impeached in a process that many neighboring countries viewed as a coup d'état. Despite the controversy surrounding his removal, Lugo remained a significant figure in Paraguayan politics.

After his presidency, he continued to engage in public service, being elected to the Senate of Paraguay in both the 2013 and 2018 general elections. However, his political career faced challenges, culminating in his failure to secure reelection in the 2023 Paraguayan general election.
