Fernando Poe Jr., born Ronald Allan Kelley Poe on August 20, 1939, was a towering figure in Philippine cinema, known affectionately as "Da King." His career spanned nearly five decades, during which he became a cultural icon, dominating the box office from the 1960s to the 1990s with his compelling performances in action films. Poe's journey in the film industry began as a stuntman after the passing of his father, Fernando Poe Sr., and he made his film debut in 1955 with "Anak ni Palaris." His breakout role came in the 1956 film "Lo Waist Gang," which set the stage for a prolific career.

Poe starred in approximately three hundred films, portraying characters that resonated with the Filipino audience as the "champion and defender of the poor and oppressed." His notable works include "Only the Brave Know Hell" (1965), "Santiago!" (1970), and the self-directed "Ang Panday" (1980) along with its sequels. His films often highlighted social issues, making him a beloved figure in the hearts of many Filipinos.

Throughout his illustrious career, Poe received numerous accolades, including five FAMAS Awards for Best Actor, which earned him a place in the FAMAS Hall of Fame in 1988. He also won Best Director for his films "Ang Padrino" (1984) and "Kahit Butas ng Karayom, Papasukin Ko" (1995). In 2004, he was posthumously honored with the Natatanging Alagad ng Sining Award, and in 2006, he was declared a National Artist of the Philippines, a recognition accepted by his family in 2012.

In addition to his cinematic achievements, Poe ventured into politics, running for president in the 2004 elections. He narrowly lost to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo by just over one million votes, marking one of the closest margins in Philippine presidential history. Tragically, seven months after the election, he passed away from a stroke, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues alike.

Poe was married to actress Susan Roces, who was not only his partner in life but also his love interest in seventeen films. He was the proud father of Senator Grace Poe and actress Lovi Poe, continuing his legacy in both the entertainment and political arenas.
