Fernão de Loronha

Fernão de Loronha, born around 1470, was a notable Portuguese merchant and explorer hailing from Lisbon. Of Jewish descent, he played a significant role in the early 16th century as a prominent figure in maritime trade and exploration.

Between the years fifteen hundred and two and fifteen hundred and twelve, Loronha served as the first charter-holder, a position that allowed him to influence the burgeoning Portuguese overseas expeditions. His contributions were pivotal in establishing trade routes and expanding Portugal's reach across the seas.

In addition to his role as a merchant, Loronha was the first donatary captain in Brazil, a title that underscored his importance in the colonization efforts of the time. His sponsorship of numerous expeditions helped lay the groundwork for future exploration and settlement.

One of his most notable achievements was the discovery of the islands of Fernando de Noronha, located off the coast of Brazil. In fifteen hundred and four, these islands were granted to Loronha and his heirs as a fief, forever linking his name to this beautiful archipelago.
