Filip Konowal

Filip Konowal, born on September fifteenth, eighteen eighty-eight, was a distinguished soldier who made his mark in history as a highly decorated Ukrainian Canadian. His remarkable bravery and dedication to duty earned him the prestigious Victoria Cross, making him the first member of the Canadian Corps not born in the British Empire to receive this honor. This accolade is the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy, bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces.

In addition to the Victoria Cross, Konowal was also recognized with the Cross of St George, 4th Class, further highlighting his exceptional service and commitment during his military career. His contributions to the war effort and his valor in battle have left an indelible mark on Canadian military history.

Beyond his military achievements, Filip Konowal is remembered as the patron of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 360, known as the Konowal Branch, located in Toronto.
