Filipe Nyusi, born on February 9, 1959, is a prominent Mozambican politician who served as the President of Mozambique from 2015 to 2025. His political career includes significant roles such as the Minister of Defense from 2008 to 2014 under President Armando Guebuza and the Chairman of the Southern African Development Community from 2020 to 2022. Nyusi's presidency was marked by his efforts to engage with opposition parties, notably signing multiple agreements with RENAMO.
Despite winning the presidential elections in 2014 and 2019 as the candidate of FRELIMO, Nyusi's tenure has been marred by allegations of electoral irregularities. While the President of the National Election Commission claimed the elections were free and fair, various international observers reported instances of fraud, intimidation, and violence against opposition leaders and election monitors.
During his administration, the trend of poverty reduction observed in previous years reversed, with the number of multidimensionally poor individuals rising from approximately twenty-one point three million to twenty-two point two million between 2015 and 2018. This increase was particularly pronounced in rural areas of central Mozambique.
Nyusi's time in office has also been overshadowed by violence, with at least ten high-profile figures, including opposition leaders and journalists, killed since 2015. Additionally, he has faced accusations of abuse of power, including allegations of receiving bribes amounting to two million dollars related to illegal loans that contributed to an economic crisis in Mozambique.
Furthermore, his presidency has seen an escalation of conflict in Mozambique's central and northern regions, leading to critiques of his government as authoritarian by various analysts and organizations.
