Flaminio Bertoni

Flaminio Bertoni, born on January tenth, nineteen oh three, was a multifaceted Italian artist whose talents spanned sculpture, architecture, painting, engineering, and industrial design. His career flourished in the years leading up to World War II and continued until his passing in nineteen sixty-four.

Before venturing into the realm of industrial design, Bertoni honed his skills as a sculptor. His most notable contributions came during his long tenure at Citroën, where he played a pivotal role in designing iconic automobiles such as the Traction Avant in nineteen thirty-four, the beloved 2CV, the H van, the revolutionary DS, and the Ami 6.

The Citroën DS, in particular, became a symbol of innovation and elegance, frequently showcased at prestigious industrial design exhibitions, including the Milan Triennale Exposition in nineteen fifty-seven. This masterpiece inspired renowned French coach builder Henri Chapron, who crafted both coupé and cabriolet versions of the DS.

In recognition of his artistic contributions, Bertoni was awarded the esteemed Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in nineteen sixty-one. He passed away on February seventh, nineteen sixty-four, at the age of sixty-one. To honor his legacy, a museum dedicated to his memory was established in the province of Varese, opening its doors in May two thousand seven and relocating to Volandia Park and Flight Museum in two thousand sixteen.
