Flip Wilson

Clerow "Flip" Wilson Jr. was born on December 8, 1933, and became a prominent figure in American entertainment, particularly known for his work as a comedian and actor. His career took off during the late 1960s and 1970s, a period when he captivated audiences with his unique style and humor.

From 1970 to 1974, Wilson hosted the groundbreaking variety series The Flip Wilson Show, which not only showcased his comedic talents but also introduced the beloved character Geraldine. This show achieved remarkable success, earning Wilson a Golden Globe and two Emmy Awards, and it was once the second highest-rated program on network television.

Wilson made history as the first African American to host a successful TV variety show, a milestone that was recognized when Time magazine featured him on its cover in January 1972, dubbing him "TV's first black superstar." His influence extended beyond television; he also released several comedy albums during the 1960s and 1970s, winning a Grammy Award for his album The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress.

Even into the 1990s, Wilson continued to perform and act, albeit at a reduced pace, until his passing from cancer on November 25, 1998. He briefly revived the classic show People Are Funny in 1984 and starred in the sitcom Charlie & Co. from 1985 to 1986, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire comedians and entertainers today.
