Flora Sandes

Flora Sandes, born on January twenty-second, eighteen seventy-six, was a remarkable British woman who made her mark in history as a combat medic and military officer during World War I. Her journey began as a volunteer with the St John Ambulance, where her dedication to service led her to the Kingdom of Serbia, a nation in dire need of support during the tumultuous war.

Upon her arrival, Flora was warmly welcomed and formally enlisted in the Royal Serbian Army, making her the only British woman to serve as a soldier in that conflict. Her commitment and bravery did not go unnoticed; she quickly rose through the ranks, achieving the esteemed position of sergeant major and later being promoted to senior captain after the war.

Throughout her service, Flora was recognized for her exceptional contributions, earning seven medals that celebrated her valor and dedication. Her story is not just one of military achievement but also of breaking barriers and redefining the role of women in armed conflict.
